04/03/2003 Entry: "John Wayne's Eldest Son Dies at 68"

BURBANK, Calif. - Michael Wayne, the eldest son of late actor John Wayne who helped produce several of his father's films, has died. He was 68.

Wayne died of heart failure Wednesday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center following complications from lupus, an immune system disease, publicist Warren Cowan said Thursday.

He was the head of Wayne Enterprises, which owns many of his father's films. Distributing the movies and merchandising his father's image occupied much of Wayne's time, along with real estate and other investments.

He said in 1991 that there were both advantages and drawbacks of having such a famous father, but "the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. I produced 'McClintock!' when I was 25 years old. I don't think if I wasn't John Wayne's son, I would have had that opportunity."

"It wasn't all smooth, working with my father; there were a lot of bumps along the way, both for him and me," he said. "But I wish he were still around so we could get in arguments."

Among the films Michael Wayne helped produce were "Brannigan" (1975), "The Green Berets" (1968), "Big Jake" (1971) and "The Train Robbers" (1973).

He also was chairman of the board of the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John's Health Center. John Wayne died of lung cancer in 1979.

Wayne graduated from Loyola University of California in 1956 and served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gretchen; his mother, Josephine Alicia Saenz; two brothers; three sisters; five children; and two grandchildren.

When you speak of Michael Wayne, it would be nice to see of photo of Michael Wayne, not his father. I would like to see a photo of Michael Wayne, especially since this obituary or mini bio is about Michael Wayne.

I grew up with movies of Mr. John Wayne, but it wasn't until my son Ryan (also of Irish\Scottich heritage) had to do a biography of some one famous that I learned of the wonderful, dedicated, talented and man of integrety he really was.

He is truly missed and my condolences to his son Michael's family on their loss.

Sincere Condolences.

My deepest sympathies to all the Wayne family. I just heard of Michael's death. Patrick and I are the same age, so I have always felt kin to him and envied him for having the "DUKE" as his father. Now with Michael gone, Patrick will have to be the head of the
house sort of speak. I feel that he will be able to carry on in his father's and brother's footseps.

I had the good fortune to know Michael Wayne in connection with a museum honoring the Flying Tigers in Guilin, China. Michael introduced me to some of the original Flying Tigers, whom he said he felt honored to know, but it was clear that these WWII heroes were honored to know Michael too -- not just as the son of John Wayne, but in his own right. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time.

This article says that Michael Wayne is survived by three sisters. I believe that John Wayne had 2 daughters by his first marriage and 2 daughters by his third marriage. Did another sister pass away?

Deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Michael Wayne and his entire family at this most difficult time.
