In late 1954, John Wayne's only 3-D film, HONDO, was released by Warner Brothers in just a few 3-D locations. For the most part, the 3-D aspect of this film was state of the art for the era in which it was released.

Over the past several years, Hondo has been seen only in its' 2-D version, or in analglyph format (using inferior red/blue
cellphane/carboard glasses) for limited broadcast albeit a good cause to aid in cancer research.

It is now possible to get closer to the real thing, thanks to electronic glasses, which have been gradually sold by several companies on a global basis. There are approx
300,000- plus of these glasses out there at this time. A DVD home video distributor, Slingshot Entertainment, has just released
4 3-D Large Format films (most were initially shown in Imax theatres) in 3-D on DVD and also offers the glasses either in a special package or via internet and mail order. The films offer the option of viewing in either the 3-D version or in non-3D versions, giving the viewer the option as to which way to see them. It is anticipated that there will be a huge demand for these films, and the distributor may experience a windfall relative to these 3-D titles. So why not "Hondo" Here we have one of the better Wayne westerns, certainly the one that sort of cast in stone his image for the remainder of his western film career. HONDO also marked the first appearance of actress Geraldine Page, who recieved an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for this film. Strangely enough, she finally won an Oscar for her final film "Road to Bountiful"

Many of us would like to relive the experience of finally being able to see
HONDO as John Wayne intended it to be seen in the first place....infull color 3-D. The rights to HONDO are controlled by the John Wayne estate, under Batjac Productions, located in Beverly Hills, Ca. For those of you who are not only Fans of John Wayne, but also 3-D, you should demand a 3-D DVD full color field sequential release of this film. Relative to the very beginning and end of the film (which actually amounts to a few seconds) where one of the negatives was cut to accomodate the TV distributors logo and never put back in, it is also now very possible to convert those brief shots back to 3-D without too much expense involved. Best of luck in your efforts to make this happen.
