: What was the reason for John Wayne wearing just one long cartridge in the middle of his back on his gunbelt?, and what caliber was it?..thanks for any help...dbl_barrel@hotmail.com
I heard once that back in the early part of Duke's career he had a talk with an older gentlemen that lived out west in the late 1800's and he told Duke that most gunfighters stuck a rifle cartridge in one of their belt loops, so when they were in a long fight where they had to reload alot, they could reach back and when they felt that rifle cartridge they knew how many rounds they had left. I believe the empty cartridge Duke used was a 45-70. I hope this answers your question and by the way John Bianchi gun leather sells the Duke model holster and belt set for $325.00 which is an exact copy of the one he made for Duke.
